The Connection Between Elderberries and Your Gut Health

 By Marley Archibald

Did you know that every person on earth has a unique set of bacteria, called their microbiome? This unique, fingerprint-like set of bacteria plays a significant role in our health according to a 2024 study conducted by experts at Stanford. Through the study, they discovered that our microbiome, our metabolic health, and our immune health are intricately interwoven. As such, it is crucial to support your microbiome. One of the best ways to do this is through your gut health– after all, the gut is the home to trillions of these microorganisms that support our bodies!

Since immune health is linked to the microbiome, elderberries are already an excellent way to support your gut. Elderberries are commonly known for their immune supporting strength, and every single ingredient we use in our small-batch, handcrafted Elderberry Syrup is high in antioxidants– especially since we use not just elderberries, but also aronia berries. While elderberries are already high in antioxidants, aronia berries are even higher in antioxidants, as well as containing higher amounts of essential minerals such as potassium, iron, zinc, and magnesium.

The benefits of elderberry for your microbiome and gut health don’t stop at supporting immune health, though. Elderberries actually can directly support your gut health! Elderberries are exceptionally high in polyphenols, crucial plant compounds that “improve lipid profiles, blood pressure, insulin resistance, and systemic inflammation.” A 2022 study on the type of polyphenols found in European Black Elderberries, though, found that elderberries have an especially good function acting as a prebiotic. Wait, what is a prebiotic? I have only heard of probiotics! To put it simply, probiotics are essentially adding additional amounts of good bacteria into your gut. Prebiotics, however, are the food for these good bacteria. It is important to consume prebiotic-rich foods, as it is not enough to have good bacteria in your gut. You need to support and feed those bacteria so that they can flourish and promote a healthy, balanced gut environment!

Even further, a 2023 study conducted on rats found that a diet containing elderberries improved symptoms of IBS and other gut-brain axis dysfunctions. According to Johns Hopkins, “For decades, researchers and doctors thought that anxiety and depression contributed to [IBS and other functional bowel problems]. But our studies and others show that it may also be the other way around. Researchers are finding evidence that irritation in the gastrointestinal system may send signals to the central nervous system (CNS) that trigger mood changes.”

This gut-brain connection (as well as the gut microbiome overall) is something that scientists are still learning more about. What has become abundantly clear though, is that our gut health is crucial to our overall well-being.
