Unlock Radiant Skin: How The Elderberry Co.'s Syrup Battles Menopause Skin Changes with Powerful Ingredients

By Candace Boerema

Why does syrup from The Elderberry Co. help a woman’s skin during the perimenopause and menopause stages of life? Maureen Salamon, executive editor of Harvard Women’s Health Watch and author of “Beyond hot flashes: Failing estrogen and rising inflammation can fuel a surprising array of menopause symptoms,” explains,  “. . .the drop in estrogen, in particular, sets off a wave of low-grade inflammation that can lead to body-wide complaints.”

Salamon goes on to explain, “hormone drops and inflammation can lead to unanticipated  [and] noticeable skin changes, such as dryness and thinning.”  When a woman sees her skin losing its glow, the lowered production of estrogen and the presence of free radicals are probably  the main culprits.

As I noticed these skin changes, I searched for a doctor who could help me combat the symptoms of menopause.  I tried several different practitioners and found myself not getting answers or receiving preventative treatment.  Finally, after months of searching, I found a doctor who suggested I start using a compounded hormone cream (testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen) and he also suggested I take a “super vitamin C” supplement to reduce the inflammation in my body.

I did not buy a special vitamin C supplement, but instead, a sore throat led me to start taking The Elderberry Co.’s syrup around the same time.  Within a month, I noticed my skin was no longer dry and lackluster.  Taking the syrup seemed to produce a side effect beyond improved immune health.

What are the ingredients in The Elderberry Co.’s syrup and how do they positively affect skin, especially in perimenopause and menopause?

In a scientific study published in Cytotechnology in October of 2019, authors Pei Lin, Eunson Hwang, Hien T.T. Ngo, Seul A. Seo, and Tae-Hoo Yi, all researchers at the College of Life Science in Korea, explain their study of elderberry and its effects on the skin: “The phytochemical profile study indicated . . . elderberry contain[s] large amounts of anthocyanins, flavonoids, organic acids, and other polyphenols, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiallergic and antiviral properties. Their consumption may contribute to prevention of skin aging and inflammatory disease” (1003–1017).  In short, elderberry, the main ingredient in The Elderberry Co.’s syrup, is power packed with ingredients to help fight the effects of aging, perimenopause and menopause.

A second ingredient to pay attention to in The Elderberry Co.’s syrup is the aronia berry.  “Effect of Aronia Extract on Collagen Synthesis in Human Skin and Dermal Equivalent,” an article published in Oxidative Medicine and Cell Longevity in 2022, illustrates the findings from a study done by Hwa,-Rim Lee and Hye Guk Ryu et al.  These researchers found the aronia berry to increase synthesis of collagen and to be useful for the treatment of damaged or aging skin.

The Elderberry Co.’s syrup also contains ginger root, and an increasing amount of research is finding that the prebiotics found in ginger can decrease inflammation.  Research published on the Johns Hopkins Medicine website claims, “Ginger contains antioxidants.  These molecules help manage free radicals, which are compounds that can damage cells when their numbers grow too high” (“Ginger Benefits”).  Organic Caylon Cinnamon is another ingredient in The Elderberry Co.’s syrup known for reducing inflammation.  Anna Baluch, in the Forbes article “5 Health Benefits of Cinnamon, According to Experts,” says, “It’s packed with powerful antioxidants, including polyphenols, which are naturally occurring compounds that protect against oxidative damage caused by free radicals.” Of course, my 47 year old skin was fighting free radicals and the ginger root and cinnamon in my syrup came to the rescue!

The Elderberry Co. syrup’s ingredients also include organic clove.  The article “5 Clove Water Benefits for Perimenopause” by Drs. Michael, Carrie and Jeremy Lam says, “Another benefit of the antioxidant properties of cloves is the reduction of wrinkles and aging lines on the skin, making the skin appear younger. Moreover, clove water helps to moisturize the skin and improve its tone.” So, logically, clove in The Elderberry Co.’s syrup helped to reduce the fine lines and wrinkles I was encountering and I loved the result!

So, why did my skin’s appearance start to improve when I drank syrup from The Elderberry Co.? The power packed ingredients support why this syrup is not only necessary for immune support, but for our skin as we age.  When our bodies produce less estrogen, we need to better support our skin.
